Loan Counseling
Entrance Counseling
If you are a first-time borrower at the University of Minnesota, Crookston you are required by federal regulations to attend a loan entrance interview before your payment is disbursed. Loan entrance counseling can be accessed via the web for both Ford Federal Direct Loans and SELF Loans.
Exit Counseling
Loan exit counseling session is required if you’ve borrowed from any of the following loan programs:
- Federal Perkins Loan (formerly the National Direct Student Loan)
- Ford Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loan
You must attend an exit interview for Ford/Stafford Federal Direct Loans (subsidized and unsubsidized) and Federal Perkins Loans if in the current or next term you:
- Do not register at the University of Minnesota, Crookston,
- Graduate from the University,
- Transfer to another college or university, or
- Register for, or drop below, half-time status.
Contact the UMC Business Office and the UMC Financial Aid Office to arrange an exit interview if any of these conditions arise after you have borrowed from these loan programs.
During the loan exit counseling session you will be advised of your borrower rights and responsibilities as well as those of the lender. There will be an opportunity to have your questions answered on loan repayment, deferment, and conditions that qualify for cancellation of your loans.
Federal Perkins Loan Borrowers: You are required to complete exit counseling for your loans before you graduate or a hold will be placed on your record. Please contact the Financial Aid Office if you have questions, 170 Owen Hall, 218-281-8576, fa@umcrookston.edu .
· Students who have applied to graduate will receive an email to their UMC email account explaining how to complete the exit counseling process online.
· Students transferring or leaving school must notify the Financial Aid Office to initiate the exit counseling process.
Ford Federal Direct Subsidized and/or Unsubsidized Loan Borrowers : You must complete your loan exit counseling session online at www.dlservicer.ed.gov . You will need to have your FAFSA pin number available to enter the site. Click on exit counseling at the top right hand corner and then scroll down to the bottom left side to enter the exit counseling site. We will be electronically notified when you have completed the process. Please contact our office if you have any questions.
SELF Loan and Alternative Loan (Bremer, CitiAssist, Wells Fargo, etc.) Borrowers: There is no requirement for exit loan counseling.
